About Tanner

Clarinetist

Tanner Shioshita (They/Them) is a musician and engineer who lives in San Francisco, California. They started playing the clarinet in elementary school at the age of ten and one quarter, and loved playing so much they never stopped. They currently play in several groups including a classical orchestra, a LGBTQ+ concert band, and a jazz big band, in which they play the saxophone as well as the clarinet. They also love to explore writing music, and have written and performed pieces in genres ranging from classical to folk. They briefly dabbled in trying to repair their own instruments, but that didn’t last long (best to actually get training if you want to do that sort of thing). They are addicted to learning new instruments, and then rearranging their room to try to find space to store the new instruments in their small San Francisco apartment. They frequently practice unplanned duets with their pet lovebird, who is just called Bird, small parrot with an attitude and a voice to be heard.

Tanner grew up in Boulder Colorado, getting their undergraduate degree in both Music and Mechanical engineering after dreaming of being an inventor growing up, but falling in love with music along the way. They like to build projects ranging from a bike powered by a drill, to a loft in their room complete with a cave of musical instruments. They also love being outdoors, and can be found rock climbing, hiking, camping, or surfing whenever they possibly can (though being pretty new to living by the ocean “surfing” mostly means sitting in the freezing water looking out for seals).
